Job Description

MARINE MACHINIST (JOURNEYMAN LEVEL) SUMMARY

Responsible for correctly planning, preparing, and executing general machining work in or around vessel and shipyard.  Set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts. Includes makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments. May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. 

Determine correct tools to use in each job.  Safety inspect gear, test as needed.  Operate shop machinery and hand tools to repair and clean various marine and yard machining.  May perform basic maintenance to tools, machinery, and general equipment.  Operate all equipment in a safe manner.  May perform safety inspection of equipment, machines and tools.


Knowledge:
Must know OSHA/Cal OSHA safety rules. Must know the proper use of all shop and dock-side equipment and hand tools to repair and clean marine and yard machining. Must know how to properly disassemble, repair, clean, and reassemble various equipment including environmental restrictions and procedures. Must understand the usage of heat and hydraulic jacks. Must be able to read service drawings. Must be able to operate all basic hand gear.

Equipment:
Skilled with calipers, micrometers, various hand tools, ladders, scaffolding, stairs, manlifts and associated equipment.

Supervision:
Instructions given from general supervision or foreperson through oral and written instructions. Work is performed in accordance with standard trade practices and is inspected for conformity to QA specifications. May give instruction to helpers assisting in the work.

Education:
High School or equivalent experience, OSHA 10 hour training

Experience:
Journeyman level experience with 5 years in marine or refinery environment.

Working Conditions
Normal working hours from 7am-3:30pm but may be required to answer customer service calls during evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Work sometimes takes place in wiring closets (small confined spaces), shipboard operations room (noisy environment), climbing ladder wells aboard ship and carrying equipment on and off vessels.
