The Office of Advancement oversees and guides the fundraising efforts of the entire Smithsonian and is home to the central advancement organization for the Institution. In addition to raising significant support for a variety of Smithsonian initiatives, the Office of Advancement provides support services to advancement offices across the Institution. The office engages with staff throughout the Smithsonian in accomplishing their goals.

Key Responsibilities
The Smithsonian Office of Advancement seeks experienced and creative candidates to fill the position of Assistant Director, Membership for the Friends of the Smithsonian program. The Friends of the Smithsonian program raises unrestricted funds for the Institution and includes the James Smithson Society and the Castle Circle. The Assistant Director will be responsible for partnering with program leadership to develop and implement strategies for growth in membership and revenue. The Assistant Director will share responsibility for the management of donor stewardship for both the Castle Circle and James Smithson Society, in partnership with the Director of the Smithsonian Giving Circles. Responsibilities include management of direct marketing program; event planning and execution; collaboration and counsel to Smithsonian membership programs; and planning and implementation of presenters, venues, tours, and programmatic content for the Annual Smithsonian Weekend, an event hosted by the Smithsonian Leadership and produced by the Office of Advancement.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise
Qualified applicants will have a minimum of five years of progressive fundraising experience, including developing membership and engagement strategies, donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, and utilizing a fundraising database. Must successfully demonstrate strong writing and communications skills, an ability to successfully manage multiple deadlines, superior organizational skills, supervisory experience and a thirst for learning. Experience in a large, complex non-profit organization preferred. Occasional work during the evenings and weekends will be necessary.
