Job Description

Mare Island Dry Dock is seeking to add new Maritime (Shipyard) Environmental Technician Specialists to join our team! 

 

Sr ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN SPECIALIST SITE SUMMARY - The Environmental Sr level Specialist is responsible for assisting the Environmental Manager in implementing and maintaining programs for environmental protection and compliance; in the absence of the Environmental Manager, act as a liaison with local, state, and federal environmental agencies; inspection and maintenance of Best Management Practices; participate in emergency planning activities; assisting in environmental incident investigations, integrating environmental programs in the production environment; and training of employees and subcontractors.  


The job has an emphasis in air quality regulation, especially Title V/NESHAP marine coating rules and records, SPCC, Over Water Transfers, TSCA, Storm Water, Wastewater Treatment, Hazardous Waste management and Environmental Sustainability.

- Vallejo Sanitation: Monthly Drainage log to VSFCD, Quarterly report preparation and submittal to VSFCD, Daily Dock cleanliness walkthroughs, Permit Compliance

- Over the Water Transfer Point of Contact

- Waste Water Treatment and Management

NPDES Dry Dock Permit Compliance 

 - Dry Dock Wipe Sampling

 - Receiving Water Sampling

 - Sediment Sampling

 - Before flood and during flood visual monitoring

 - BMP implementation and corrective actions

 - Quarter/Annual Self-Monitoring Reports: preparation and submittal

Environmental Training Database: Development, implementation, and training 

Daily documented Environmental ship and yard walk throughs 

Work with Safety/Production on Safety Data Sheet tracking/updating

Subcontractor oversight and PO Management


Minimum Requirements:

Education: Required: Min 7 years’ experience, High School Degree or GED, Preferred: 4 year Degree in related field and/or EMR

Experience: A minimum of 3 years’ experience in marine environmental industry.

Skill, Knowledge and Abilities: Complex problem solving skills to identify and prioritize problem areas and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Microsoft Office program computer skills are required. 

 

Additional Requirements:

  • Knowledge of California and Federal OSHA regulations, Federal Maritime industry standards experience preferred
  • Ability to climb ladders and walk for up to 8 hours per day
  • Microsoft Office intermediate to advanced level experience
  • Must be able to wear a face mask for a full shift
  • Experience and ability to work with people collaboratively
  • Ability to work and inspect in small confined spaces
  • Ability to do simple math, averages, conversion of units, etc.
  • Physical: Ability to drive or travel to locations, physically observe operations, stand, walk, climb, talk, listen and actively participate in communicating effectively with employees, customers and public. Use hands to reach, grasp, handle or feel. Able to walk on ships and in ship areas. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

 

Mental: Basic math and reading skills, writing and spelling ability to communicate clearly and effectively on all technical and business levels.

 

Working Conditions: Office; occasional exposure to wet humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles; moderate noise; occasional intense light/glare; work near moving machinery. Travel primarily involves ground transportation to and from job sites. Normal working hours from 7am-3:30pm but may be required to answer customer service calls during evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Work sometimes takes place in wiring closets (small confined spaces), shipboard operations room (noisy environment), climbing ladder wells aboard ship and carrying equipment on and off vessels.
