Central Garden & Pet is growing our Data and Analytics team and is adding a new Senior Data Engineerto the team. This role will be based in Schaumburg, IL and will have significant responsibilities related to identifying, developing, solutioning, supporting, and leading multiple Data & Analytics initiatives and systems across the company. This position requires cross-functional leadership and a strong technical skillset. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong ability to problem solve in ambiguous situations and a capability to deliver solutions within time and scope. The ability to communicate with key stakeholders and management will be expected. The candidate will be expected to collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data accuracy, reliability, and efficiency in support of business intelligence, data warehousing, and analytics initiatives. The candidate for this role will be an individual contributor with hands on experience with no direct reports.
MEASURES OF SUCCESS
- Work with business stakeholders to understand, document, and articulate unstructured issues and develop appropriate solutions. Serve as a technical liaison for business teams to define, estimate and recommend optimized technology solution
- Communicate objective, business value, and status of analytical initiatives to stakeholders and senior leadership. Strong verbal, written, and visual communication abilities
- Lead cross-functional projects using advanced data modeling and analysis techniques to discover insights that will guide strategic decisions
- Design and build infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL, Python and ETL tool.
- Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL), Store Procedures as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases & Big data.
- Must be able to build data pipelines, architectures, and data sets from raw, loosely structured data & build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management.
- Provide guidance to ensure optimized data pipelines for business use cases, analytical modeling, and standard reporting.
- Create high-level design documents with visual diagrams of system architecture, functionality, and process flows.
- Design and implement QA and Production environment and processes allowing end-to-end testing of proposed changes from data ingestion to visualization
- Strong project management and organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, quickly changing environment. Ability to keep up with multiple projects and understand the impact of projects within a larger system.
- Provide input on key database architecture designs based upon expected analytical use cases and business need
- Build, develop, and maintain reporting platforms and automated data pipelines
IDEAL CANDIDATE ATTRIBUTES
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, CIS, IT, Engineering (all branches) or related quantitative field (MS degree preferred)
- 4+ years in related professional experience as a data engineer/architect designing and deploying data systems
- Mastery of database and data warehouse methodologies and techniques from transactional databases to dimensional data modeling, to wide denormalized datamarts
- Deep understanding of SQL and experience building data pipelines with ETL tools
- Ability to handle large datasets with the appropriate technique
- Experience with development in QA & production deployment
- Experience with building OLAP Cubes, dimensions, business-critical KPIs
- Experience with Tableau, Power BI, SAP Business Objects, or similar reporting platform
- Familiarity with cloud technology like Azure is a plus
- Experience working in a strategic role and working with unstructured problems
- Evidence of strong communication skills
- Demonstrated thought leadership and intellectual curiosity
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This is a hybrid position based out of our Schaumburg office, requiring at least 3 days per week in the office.
