Bell Nursery, Marydel Farm - Head Grower
Job Description
The Head Grower is responsible for overall quality and timing of all crop production. This includes, collaboration with General Manager, directing the grower team, managing crews, record keeping, overseeing IPM (disease/sanitation/pesticide application), and WPS, and management of the associated materials and equipment needed to accomplish the tasks.
Tasks and Responsibilities
• Responsible for overall quality and timing of crops, consistently producing top quality crops efficiently and on schedule.
• Responsible for monitoring crop nutrition, crop protection through IPM
• Responsible for scheduling, directing, and supervising the growing and production team to meet above responsibilities
• Responsible for ensuring crop production records and spray records are maintained
• Responsible for ensuring WPS compliance
• Responsible for producing top-quality crops, efficiently and on schedule
Qualifications
• Minimum of a 4-year B.S. degree in Horticulture or related field, Or
• 5 or more years practical experience in nursery, perennial, mum or related nursery production.
• Broad knowledge of growing protocols for perennials, mums, asters, annuals, and other field and greenhouse crops
Skills and Competencies
• Excellent communication skills required
• Proven ability to recognize issues affecting quality , yield or timing and quickly identify solutions
• Proven ability to identify efficiencies and resource saving solutions
• Ability to work with and lead a team of skilled horticultural workers
Requirements
• Basic computer skills
• Excellent management, leadership, and communication skills, Spanish a plus but not required
• Candidate must be self-motivated and organized and follow through with tasks and goals
• Candidate must have strong interpersonal, motivational and communication skills,
• Candidate must be able to work weekends as appropriate
• Ability to lift up to 40lbs.
• Hold current Pesticide applicators license
