Job Description

Position Overview:

Responsible for the safe maintenance and repair of machinery and fixtures of the plant. Maintenance will be done in both a preventative and repair format. Persons in this position will perform their duties in compliance with company rules including but not limited to rules regarding; Lock Out/Tag Out, Confined Space, Chemical Handling, Tool Usage, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), etc.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Minor paint projects to facility and production areas
  • General facility repairs to restrooms, break areas, offices and warehouse.
  • Monthly inventory of Hazmat and paint supplies
  • Perform and record preventative maintenance. This is done on Daily, Weekly & Monthly schedules: facility inspection form
  • Complete paperwork as necessary and in a timely manner
  • Monitor wastewater activity – Balance chemicals used to obtain desired PH balance
  • Electrical repairs to auxiliary equipment, plugs, motors, wall outlets
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair facility systems, Wastewater treatment, Reyco, Lyco and compressed air systems
  • Research and submit parts request to management
  • Facility readings include – wastewater – compressed air system – chemical pumps - hot water system
  • Use of lift-trucks when necessary
  • Interact with plant personnel and customer staff as necessary
  • Respond to questions and concerns of machine operators
  • Ensure work is done within company policy regarding food safety
  • Compliance with Calavo's ' Good Manufacturing Practices [GMPs]
  • Reporting any unauthorized persons in or about the facility as well as incidents of employee tampering to management
  • Understanding basic concepts of food borne illness
  • Comply with all food labeling requirements as determined by specific job within company
  • Ensure maintenance procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed

Job Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School diploma required
  • Previous experience (2 years) in equipment repair or maintenance related field is preferred
  • Trade school or certifications preferred
  • Tools and Shop Equipment – Basic understanding of Shop tools and the proper use. Basic understanding of hand tools and the proper use
  • Fabrication – general understanding, knowledge and hands on experience
  • Electrical wiring – Basic understanding of schematics, wiring configurations and electrical safety
  • Supply ordering and Parts requisition – ability to read technical manual; research parts and comply with ordering process
  • Oral Communication - Speaks and understands so as to follow directions and get clarification; Responds well to questions
  • Written Communication - Able to read and interpret written information
  • Organizational Support - Follows policies and procedures. Completes administrative tasks correctly and on time. Supports organization's goals and values
  • Planning/Organizing - Prioritizes and plans work activities; Uses time efficiently

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to talk or hear
  • Frequently required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel
  • Required to reach with hands and arms
  • Occasionally lift and/or move between 10 and 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus

  • Must wear personal protective equipment (hair net, cutting gloves, work sleeves, smock, and non-slip water resistant footwear)
  • Work in cold and wet working environment (approx. 34 degrees) –warm clothing is advised (heavy socks, pants, jacket, head covering, etc.)
  • Physical hazards of working in and about moving machinery
  • Must be cognizant of body and limbs so as to not be too close to machinery
